I recently began drumming with a West African Drumming Group. I have the great good fortune to be able to buy a set up Dunun Drums, I play base.
I have always been drawn to drumming, even as early as a teenager I would dance with my eyes shut bringing the beat of the drums into my soul. I would dance barefoot with great abandon.
My life in those early days revolved around the next dance. I did not realize then that the drums helped to promote the productions of endorphins and helped me stay in the moment which helped me reduce stress. Dancing and listening to the beat of the drums became a moving mediation for me.
Studies show that the rhythmic sound of drumming releases dopamine and serotonin. These are associated with happiness and pleasure which activates the reward center in the brain and can cause feelings of euphoria.
According to Dr. Barry B. Bittman,
“Drumming circles help boost the immune system and promote physical healing. Drum therapy encourages people to release inner trauma through physical movement and meditative rhythms, as well as bringing people together.”
I encourage everyone to follow their passion and consider drumming, or at least to dance to drumming, or maybe your passion is the arts, or gardening. Following your passion brings peace of mind.
